As a noted remedy for anxiety, high blood sugar, muscle and joint pain, nervousness and fatigue, magnesium may sound too good to be true. Why? The answer is two-fold.

It is the ability of magnesium to reduce the brain's production of a substance known as NMDA. This is a receptor in cells responsible for communicating pain.

As one article in Psychology Today so aptly described: "Magnesium hangs out in the synapse between two neurons along with calcium and glutamate…calcium and glutamate are excitatory…activate the NMDA receptor. Magnesium can sit on the NMDA receptor without activating it, like a guard at the gate. Therefore, if we are deficient in magnesium, there's no guard."

 Interestingly enough, medications prescribed for pain typically try to decrease or balance NMDA, but they come with a lot of unwelcome side effects. Magnesium, on the other hand, does not. Having adequate supplies in the body and daily diet can help you with chronic pain or with issues that may cause flare ups of pain, such as fibromyalgia, too.

Does Magnesium Help Nerve Pain?

Scientists are also looking at cellular magnesium and inflammation as they relate to nerve pain. According to one report, "When cellular magnesium increases, inflammatory processes such as the release of pro-inflammatory proteins decrease."

This may make many wonder if they might use magnesium a natural anti inflammatory, and the answer is a simple "yes", as well. Studies have been emerging in the ways that magnesium can suppress inflammatory proteins that are a bit part of pain signals. The simplest findings show that it is already being used for issues as severe as chronic sciatic nerve irritation and pain.

  Are there benefits of magnesium for arthritis? After all, this too is a chronic inflammatory condition. As a bone strengthening compound (making bones both rigid and flexible) and a material that supports healthy cartilage, magnesium is good for joint pain. It is also recommended by such organizations as the Arthritis Foundation. This also answers the question of "can magnesium help with joint pain", and so those with chronic joint pain issues will need to consider dietary sources as well as supplemental ways of obtaining it.

Another study found that "magnesium deficiency can be a major amplifier of pain". Clearly, this tells us that magnesium deficiency and pain are linked, and that the reverse must also apply, and that magnesium can cut down on pain by controlling the receptors, and guarding the gate.

Using magnesium for muscle pain relief is not as simple as simply popping some supplements. This is because the digestive system can actually impair your absorption of the mineral. In fact, some estimate that only 20-50% of the supplement may be absorbed, and even then, the pH of the digestive system plays a big role in how much makes it into the cells. Too much supplementation can also digestive upset.
